Chic Chalkboard For Only $1!!! (Quick Tutorial)

The other day while at the dollar tree, I found these great very sturdy Halloween signs!
There were a couple different versions, and though they were very cute and would make good halloween decor, I instantly had another idea in mind for them. I LOVED the shape of this orange one so I had to get it. It would the perfect fun shape for a chic new chalkboard for my craft room!

So I spend a total of $1 for my pretty new chalkboard.
Because I had all my other supplies on hand.
And lets be real here.. if you are a crafter, I am SURE you have these supplies already too!!

Dollar Tree Halloween Sign
Primer spray paint
Chalkboard paint (I like spray paint best.. its a lot smoother)
Glue Gun

Isn't the shape great!?

OK so the sign, seemed pretty smooth so I didn't think of doing anything to it. But if I were to do it over again I JUST MIGHT Have lightly sanded it down a bit FIRST. Just because in the end.. the original sign picture is sort of noticeable... not enough to bother me.. but if you look up close.. you can see it. If that is the sort of thing to bother, I suggest sanding it first. If not... it really is smooth enough not to.
So Step one would be to PRIME that baby!
I did a few good coats.
I was lazy and left the twine on... but again if I did it again I would have taken it off first. LOL

After about 20 min, it should be safe to add the chalkboard paint!
Again I did a few good coats.

While that was drying I knew I wanted to have some pretty embellishments,
so I made a couple fabric rosettes to match my craft room (Purple & Gray).

Then hot glued them on the chalkboard once it was done drying.

Then hung it up on my door! It looks so great!!

Here is an up close of the chalkboard, using my flash to show you what I meant about the sign print showing through. Really its not that noticeable... but really close up in the right light, you can see it.
But it really doesn't bug me much... in fact after I seasoned it.. I really couldn't see it anymore.

So all chalkboards need to be seasoned so that when you write for first time is doesn't "stain" or stick there!
To season, just turn your chalk sideways and rub all around your chalkboard surface.

This is what it should look like:

Then erase and write your message!

Quick Easy and Cheap!!
Gotta love that right!? :)

BTW... would you like to get this digital freebie chalkboard to use on your blog?
Get it here (nine rosette colors to choose from)
