Years ago I came across a story about a certain bible verse that has always stuck with me for many reasons. When I happened to see this awesome shirt, it reminded me of that story again, and the lessons and encouragement I have taken from it. So I purchased it for myself so I can have a more constant reminder. And since I have gained so much through this story, I thought I would share it with you today.
~♥~"In the late 1800s, a group of women enrolled in a bible study came across Malachi 3:3-- "He will sit as a refiner and purifier of silver." Since no one understood the verse, they commissioned one of their number to explore the process of refining silver and report back to them at their next study. The woman called a silver smith, making an appointment to watch him work.
On the appointed day, she saw him hold a piece of silver over the fire, letting it heat up. He explained that in refining silver, one needed to hold the silver in the middle of the fire where the flames were the hottest, so that all the impurities would burn away. The woman thought about God holding us in such a hot spot; then she remembered the verse, that he sits as a refiner and purifier of the silver.
She asked the silversmith if it was true he had to sit in front of the fire the whole time the silver was being refined. The silversmith answered that he not only had to sit there holding the silver, but had to keep his eye on the silver the entire time it was in the fire. If the silver was left even for a moment too long in the flames it would be destroyed. The woman was silent for a moment. Then she asked, "How do you know when the silver is fully refined?" he smiled. "Oh, that's easy. The refining process is complete when I can see my image in it."~♥~
Reading that again now gives me chills! It reminds me that when we truly see the work God does in us, we begin to understand just why we are going through such hard times. We can trust that if God is our refiner, then he will make us pure as silver with his image shining through us. Shining like a diamond. The part that says the silversmith must sit and hold the silver while it's in the flames and must keep his eye on the silver the entire time or if it's in there too long it will be destroyed, really gets to me!
I can just imagining God hold me in his hands while I am in "the flames". When ever I am or have faced a challenge in my life, any stress, any pain - EVERY hard part of life - GOD is holding me in His loving hands. Always watching over me, never letting me go or taking his eyes off me, knowing exactly when to bring me out of my hot spot, lest I be destroyed. And this is never with the intent to hurt me, his child. Its only with the refining process in mind, to purify me,and bring me to a place where He can see His image in me! And so others can see Him through me! How comforting is that to hear? This goes for YOU too, and all His children.
Another verse that comes to mind is this: "Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance." - James 1:2-3
